BRICO is an international student steel bridge competition taking place at Tallinn University of Technology since 2016. Inspired by a similar competition at USA, BRICO strives to become it’s European equivalent, providing a venue for young up-and-coming engineers and architects to apply the theoretical knowledge gained during studies in a real life situation.
Participating student-teams have to design and manufacture a steel bridge model with a span of 5 meters. The teams passing pre-evaluation round are invited to TalTech for the finals, where during a week the mechanical characteristics, assembly time and aesthetics are tested and evaluated according to our rules. The best teams are awarded with considerable monetary prizes.
The process of designing and manufacturing the bridge teaches besides the technical side and the manufacturing process much about team-building, management and logistics which are equally important in real construction sector.
During the first three years around 30 teams from 10 countries have participated, the furthest competitors from Australia. As it is a multinational competition for students, there is an extensive social and cultural programme which consists of various field trips, guided tours and other social events, of course it isn’t missing legendary estonian sauna.
What makes BRICO different from other steel bridge competitions (For example the ones held at USA and Japan) is the fact it’s completely organized by students and for students. Of course BRICO wouldn’t happen without extensive help and support from TalTech and various private sponsors.
BRICO 2019 will be taking place on 13-17 may at TalTech. Rules, regulations and further information can be found at BRICO homepage www.brico.ee. Deadline for applications for BRICO 2019 is on 6th of january 2019.
